Advancement to Candidacy Requirements: Doctorate of Education

Advancement to candidacy means that the student has achieved a level of accomplishment that demonstrates proven capability. It also signifies a level of institutional commitment to the student.

  1. To be eligible for advancement to candidacy the student must have:
    • Completed at least nine of the eighteen semester hours required for the College of Education core, three of which must be in the research area;
    • Completed at least fifteen semester hours in the major area of study;
    • Completed and successfully defended the departmental research paper;
    • Filed an approved degree plan;
    • Filed and received approval of an Application for Full-time Doctoral Residency;
    • Removed any incomplete grades; and
    • Maintained a 3.0 grade point average on all graduate work attempted at the University of Houston.
  2. A student is recommended for candidacy by the advisor and department chairperson. The College Graduate Studies Committee approves advancement of students to candidacy.
  3. Forms for advancement to candidacy may be obtained from the Academic Affairs Office. These forms are signed by the advisor and the department chairperson and returned to the Academic Affairs Office by the department.
