Admission Criteria for the Doctoral Program in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Instructional Technology
Each applicant must normally have earned a master's degree or have completed 36 semester hours of appropriate graduate work with a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 (A = 4.0).
To be considered for the Doctoral Program, you will need to gather all required materials and send them to two separate destinations. The first set of materials will be sent to the University of Houston electronically. The second set of departmental materials should be sent to our Curriculum and Instruction Graduate Admissions Office.

All materials must be received by the application deadline in order to be considered for your semester of choice. Please DO NOT send any materials to 128 E. Cullen.
The candidate is responsible for assuring that all materials are received by the Office of Graduate Admissions.
University Materials (Received electronically)

- Application fee ($45 Domestic, $75 International)
- Official GRE scores (Less than 5 years old from the application deadline)
Departmental Materials (may be mailed, emailed or hand delivered to our office, 137 Farish Hall)
- Departmental coversheet
- 2 official copies of transcripts from all universities attended
- 3 letters of recommendation with Graduate Study recommendation Form
- Writing sample that provides proof of scholarly ability. This writing sample could be a research paper, thesis, or other professional publication.
- An applicant statement describing why you are interested in pursuing your doctorate in instructional technology. Specifically address any research interests that you have.
- CV or resume
When the application folder is complete, the application is reviewed by the Instructional Technology program area, Curriculum and Instruction Department and the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies.
Doctoral applicants who meet minimal guidelines for admission will be contacted to schedule an interview with the IT faculty.
The application is then submitted to the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies for a decision. The Academic Affairs Office will officially notify the applicant of the decision. If approved, any conditions for admission will be stated on the approval form.
Assignment Of Advisor
If admission is approved, the department assigns a program advisor. It is the student's responsibility to contact the advisor and develop a degree plan. Should a change of advisor become necessary, a new advisor may be appointed with the approval of the department chair and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies.
The program advisor serves in this capacity until the formation of the research committee at which time the student asks a IT faculty member to serve as Research Chairperson. The chairperson of the research committee becomes the advisor.
