Is this program for me?
The Master’s program in Mathematics Education produces educators in mathematics who are well versed in current research and theories about mathematics learning and teaching. Graduates teach mathematics at all levels, from early childhood through college, and serve as leaders across the field. The program focuses on analysis of theories about curriculum development and implementation, learning and assessment, and becoming an agent of change in mathematics education.
It will typically take 2 to 3 years to complete the degree if students are enrolled full-time (9 hours per semester).
What will I learn?
The Master’s Program in Mathematics Education develops professional, interpersonal, and intrapersonal skills through

This program emphasizes the following essential mathematics skills:
- Analysis of theories and models of learning and teaching
- Analysis of curriculum development and resources
- Analysis of current issues in mathematics education
- Development of reflective thinking toward ongoing improved instructional practices
- Analysis and design of mentoring, coaching and other research-based professional development programs
- Analysis and critique of various research designs
Since degree plans change periodically, students will follow the degree plan that is in place at the time in which they complete an official, approved degree plan. Following are the most current sample degree plans:
This path serves several populations such as practicing secondary or community college mathematics teachers who wish to pursue graduate degrees, elementary teachers who wish to become middle school teachers or mathematics specialists, and teachers interested in technological enhancements to mathematics instruction.
A practicing middle school mathematics teacher seeking this degree may be also be eligible for the following programs:
iSMART (Integrated Science, Math & Reflective Teaching for Texas Middle School Teachers)
This program is for students who are certified to teach mathematics and are interested in collaborating with science teachers. If applicants are accepted, there will be no cost for the degree and all classes will be online.
UH4-8MMT (University of Houston 4th -8th grade Master Mathematics Teacher Certification)
This program is for students who are certified to teach mathematics and who wish to earn a UH4-8MMT Certification. Each cohort begins in the Fall semester and is a five semester course sequence with 160 practicum-hours embedded across the courses. To be eligible for the UH4-8MMT Program, applicants must be admitted to a University of Houston M.Ed or Ed.D Curriculum and Instruction mathematics education program.
Three steps to the UH4-8MMT Application:
This program is for students who have a B.S. or B.A in a mathematics-related field and are seeking 4th - 8th or 8th - 12th grade mathematics teaching certification and an M.Ed. The program is designed to overlap with the student’s certification plan to allow for simultaneous completion of certification requirements and M.Ed. requirements.
