College of Education Alumni Association - Faculty Service Award Selection Criteria

Purpose of the Award

The purpose of the College of Education Alumni Faculty Service Award is to recognize individual faculty who have rendered outstanding service to the:

  • College of Education,
  • University of Houston,
  • external profession, and
  • students of the College of Education.

Criteria Used to Select Recipients

1. Provides leadership on department/college/University committees

  • Documentation includes vita

2. Provides substantial time to department and/or college above and beyond that required for teaching and research

  • Documentation includes letter from Department Chair

3. Participates regularly in departmental administrative activities such as:

  • student research
  • student advisement,
  • class scheduling activities, and
  • monitoring of comprehensive.

4. Provides demonstrated service in local, state, and national professional organizations

  • Documentation includes vita

5. Demonstrates strong teaching performance

  • Documentation includes teaching evaluations from previous academic year and letter from a student

6. Ten years of sustained service

Nomination and Selection Process

Each department chair is asked to nominate at least one faculty member, but no more than two, for the award. Individuals are also encouraged to nominated themselves. Nominees are to submit the portfolio herein described to Ms. Carol Barr, Selection Committee Facilitator. After review of the portfolios, the Selection Committee will recommend at least two names for the final consideration of the Dean and the President of the Alumni Board, who will select the award recipient.

Nominee's Portfolio

Each nominee is asked to develop and submit a portfolio containing:

  • Letter from the nominee, specifying qualifications;
  • Vita, including description of committee work and professional organization participation; and
  • Teaching evaluations from previous academic year.

Each nominee will also request the following letters, which will be sent directly to Ms. Carol Barr, Selection Committee Facilitator, for inclusion in the portfolio:

  • Letter from department chair;
  • Letter from Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; and
  • Letter from student.

Timeline

  • Call for nominations - No later than November 21
  • Deadline for completion of portfolios - November 30
  • Committee submission of at least two names to the Dean and the President of the Alumni Board for final selection - No later than the Monday before the beginning of the winter holidays

Composition of the Selection Committee

  • Committee Chair of Awards/Scholarships
  • Current President of the COE Alumni Board;
  • Immediate Past President of COE Alumni Board;
  • Previous year's Service Award recipient;
  • One faculty representative from each academic department, appointed by the Department Chair;
  • Faculty Representative to Alumni Board; and
  • COE Business Manager, ex officio and facilitator
