2012 Dr. Theresa Monaco, Ph.D. recipient of the 2012 Saint Louis University College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Merit Award established to recognize well-rounded alumni who have achieved outstanding success in their professional careers, cultural and intellectural pursuits , and civic leadership activities. The award ceremony will take place on September 29, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. as part of the College of Arts and Sciences Homecoming festivities. Dr. Monaco received her undergraduate, masters, and doctoral degrees from St Louis University. Dr. Norma Olvera, Ph.D., Dr. Jenny Yi, Ph.D. nominated as on of the eleven Houston Area Professional for the 2012 Kathryn S. Stream Award for Excellence in Women's Health. The Texas Medical Center Women’s Health Network (TMC WHN) presents the Stream Award each year to recognize a Houston-area researcher, educator, practitioner, or community leader who demonstrates outstanding achievement in the area of women’s health. The 2012 Stream Award will be presented May 17, 2012, at the National Women’s Health Week Luncheon, Healthy Women = Healthy Houston, co-sponsored each year by the TMC WHN and the Women’s Fund for Health Education & Research. Dr. Norma Olvera, Ph.D. invited to speak at the National Hispanic Medical Association Annual Conference titled, Innovations that Improve the Health of Hispanics, Families and Communities, in Washington D.C. on Saturday April 28, 2012. She was nominated due to her dedicated work with B.O.U.N.C.E. (Behavior Opportunities Uniting Nutrition Counseling and Exercise). The event will be attended by physicians, residents, nurses, faculty, medical students, government and industry policymakers, as well as other health care professional from across the country. Sissy Wong, Ph.D. selected by the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST), to receive the 2012 Journal of Research in Science Teaching (JRST) Award for a paper titled: Beginning Secondary Science Teacher Induction: A Two-year Mixed Methods Study. Dr. Wong had the pleasure of working with five other authors on the project and received the honor at the NARST Awards Luncheon in Indianapolis, Indiana on March 27, 2012. Jerome Freiberg, Ph.D. recipient of the 2011-12 University of Houston Teaching Excellence Career Award. The award carries a cash prize of $12,000. Dr. Freiberg will be honored at the faculty awards recognition event to be held April 26 at 6:00 PM at the UH Hilton Hotel. Sara McNeil, Ph.D. recipient of the 2011-12 University of Houston Teaching Excellence Award for Distinguished Leadership in Teaching Excellence. The award carries a cash prize of $15,000 and $10,000 in departmental support. Dr. McNeil will be honored at the faculty awards recognition event to be held April 26 at 6:00 PM at the UH Hilton Hotel. Sara McNeil, Ph.D., Michael Rapp, M.Ed. recognized as 2012 ComputerWorld Honors Laureate for the Digital History Project, a website featuring new technologies to enhance teaching and research. The ComputerWorld Honors Program brings together the men, women, organizations and institutions around the world whose visionary applications of information technology promote positive social, economic and educational change. Cheryl Craig, Ph.D. received a Division B Lifetime Achievement Award in Curriculum Studies from AERA (American Educational Research Association). This award will honor Craig as a venerable and distinguished scholar with widely recognized and continuous records of accomplishment who has made substantive contributions to the field of curriculum studies. The award will be presented at the AERA Annual Meeting in Vancouver, April 2012. Cheryl Craig, Ph.D. received a 2012 Outstanding Author Contribution Award from the Emerald Literati Network for a book chapter entitled Narrative Inquiry in Teaching and Teacher Education published in Advances in Research on Teaching (volume 13). Various international scholars beyond the UK and the US have been interested in this chapter and used it to guide their work Roberta Nutt, Ph.D. received the award of ABPP (American Board of Professional Psychology) specialty board certification in Counseling Psychology. ABPP board certification attests to an excellence in meeting the advanced education, training, and professional standing established by the specialty, as well as examination by peers in the specialty attesting to the demonstration of practice in the specialty. Dr. Nutt is also ABPP board certified in Family Psychology. |

2011 Robert Wimpelberg, Ph.D received the Robert B. Howsam Award from the Texas Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. This award is presented to an individual who has demonstrated leadership and has a history of scholarly research, publishing, or exemplary teaching.
Robert Houston, Ph.D. was recognized by the Texas Association of Teacher Educators (TxATE) with its Lifetime Achievement Award at the Consortium of State Organizations for Texas Teacher Education (CSOTTE) Fall 2011 Conference in Corpus Christie TX. Margit Wiesner, Ph.D. has been elected to fellow status by the American Psychological Association (APA) in the field of evaluation, measurement and statistics. Theresa Monaco, Ph.D. received the George Washington Medal of Honor from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge (FFVF). This is the highest achievement awarded by Freedoms Foundation national headquarters in Valley Forge, PA. Freedoms Foundation awards Americans who go above and beyond in their efforts to educate their communities about the values of good citizenship, either through teaching or by example.
Catherine Horn, Ph.D. has been named a 2011 Fulbright Scholar. The Fulbright Program recognizes distinguished scholars and professors worldwide who are leaders in the educational, political, economic and cultural lives of their countries. Dr. Horn will spend five months researching and teaching at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago. Cheryl Craig, Ph.D. will be inducted in the 2011 “class” of new Fellows of the American Educational Research Association in recognition of her scholarly contributions to education research. Dr. Craig joins Dr. Jerome Freiberg and Dr. Robert McPherson as the third UH COE AERA Fellow. Andrea Burridge Ph.D., Shirley Yu Ph.D., Thomas Schanding Ph.D., Sharon Johnson Ph.D., and Ms. Kimberly Zainfeld have been chosen as winners of the first ever UH Excellence in Teaching Award for Group Teaching. They received the award for group teaching the undergraduate major in Human Development and Family Studies which is in the Department of Educational Psychology. |

2010 Joel Bloom, Ph.D. A framed lab coat displayed in the Turley Anatomy Laboratory Building at the Texas Chiropractic College in his honor. He was also awarded a Doctor of Humanities Degree for Chiropractic Medicine. Joel Bloom, Ph.D. received the David K. Brace Award, the highest award of excellence given by the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (TAHPERD). Tom Kubiszyn, Ph.D. received the 2010 Outstanding Contribution to Education Award from the Texas Psychological Association (TPA) at the Annual Convention in Dallas, TX. Roberta Nutt, Ph.D. received the (TPA) Texas Psychological Association's most prestigious award, the 2010 Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award at the Annual Convention in Dallas, TX. This award honors a lifetime of professional achievement and contribution to the field of psychology at the local, state, and national levels. Cheryl Craig, Ph.D. received the Scholarly Achievement Award from the American Association for Teaching and Curriculum at their national meeting. Tom Kubiszyn, Ph.D. has been elected by his peers as a Distinguished Practitioner to the National Academies of Practice in Psychology for his significant and enduring contributions to health care practice. Kubiszyn was presented his National Academies of Practice medallion at a the black tie NAP New Member Induction Banquet in March 2010. Dean Robert Wimpelberg was invited to be the keynote speaker as Harmony Schools' Leadership Luncheon Series. Norma Olvera, Ph.D. Commentary written in the Journal of Applied Research on Children by Richard R. Suminski from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences identified the BOUNCE (Behavior Opportunities Uniting Nutrition Counseling and Exercise) research team (led by Dr. Olvera) as a leader in the field of physical activity in Latino children. Norma Olvera, Ph.D. an article written with University of Houston faculty members; Stephanie F. Kellam, Kara Menefee, Jay Lee, & Dennis W. Smith entitled "Physical Activity in Latino Children: Research and It's Implications" was published in the Journal of Applied Research on Children. Joel Bloom, Ph.D. is the 2009-2010 UH Teaching Excellence Career Award recipient Bernard Robin, Ph.D. is the 2009-2010 UH Teaching Excellence Award for Innovation in Instructional Technology recipient Department of Educational Psychology School Psychology Program approved by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), a complement to achieving APA (American Psychological Association) accreditation in 2009. This approval runs concurrently with APA accreditation, through 2014. |

2012 Catherine Bartlett, Ed.D., awarded a 2012 H-E-B Excellence in Education award for making reading a part of the fabric of Hamilton Elementary in the Cy-Fair School District. Bartlett won $10,000 for herself and a $25,000 grant for the school. She earned an Ed.D. in Professional Leadership from the College of Education in Spring 2011. Peta-gay Chen Ledbetter, Ph.D., appointed Director of Clinical Services for the Asian American Family Services (AAFS) in Houston TX. She
earned an Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Individual Differences from the College of Education in 2008. Thusnelda M. Valdes, Ed.D., published a book, The Lost Years, an account of the experience of leaving one's country of origin and adapting to life in the U.S. which received a 2nd place award at the Houston Hispanic Book Festival. Dr. Valdes is a Psychologist and Assessment Coordinator at the Department of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at the University of Houston. She earned an Ed.D. in Counseling Psychology from the College of Education. Jennifer Gigliotti, Ed.D., appointed Associate Dean at the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies at Rice University in Houston, TX. Dr. Gigliotti had been serving as executive director of the Center for College Readiness at Rice. She earned an Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction from the College of Education in 2010. Karena T. Valkyrie, Ph.D.. received status of tenure and promotion from the rank of Assistant Professor to Associate Professor effective August 1, 2012 from Troy University in Troy Alabama. Dr. Valkyrie is a member of the Department of Psychology, Counseling and Foundations Education. She earned a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology & Individual Differences from the College of Education in 2006. |

2011 Diana De La Rosa-Pohl, Ed.D. received a 2011 Outstanding Lecturer Award from the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston. She earned an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with an emphasis in Instructional Technology from the College of Education. Herbert Karpicke, Ed.D. was honored for his outstanding work as a music educator in the Houston community with the 2011 Jacob L. and Sophia Meyer Farb School Bell Award for Lifetime Achievement. Esther Gaytan was honored as The Tiger Trail School in Spring Branch ISD 2010 Teacher of the year! Gaytan is a Bilingual Pre-K teacher and Graduated in December 2006.
