Sheng Kuan Chung, Ed.D.,
Assistant Professor & Program Director
Dr. Chung was born
in Pingtung County,
Taiwan. He graduated
from National Hsinchu University of Education,
Taiwan with a Bachelor of Education degree in Fine Arts and Crafts Education
and was a certified elementary teacher in Taipei.
As a junior college student, Dr. Chung was recognized as an established
artist with an outstanding juried exhibit record, including top honors eight
years consecutively, awarded by several fine arts museums in Taiwan.
In 1999, he received a Master’s degree in Art Education from New
York University
and then worked as an Art Specialist and Educational Coordinator working with
immigrant children and minority students in Manhattan,
NYC. In the fall of 2000, he entered the Doctoral program in Art Education at
the University of Illinois,
Urbana-Champaign. In addition to his extraordinary artistic achievement, he
was awarded a research grant from the most prestigious and highly respected
National Culture and Arts Foundation in Taiwan
and his scholarly work was published respectively in the Journal of the
National Art Education Association of the United
States and the Journal of the National
Taiwan Art Education Institute. In 2003, he held a pre-doctoral research
fellowship in the School of Art
and Design at the University of Illinois.
Additionally, he has taught art to K-16 students in various school and
community settings both in Taiwan
and in the United States.
His teaching experience continued at the University
of Illinois, where he has been a
K-12 art instructor and supervisor of student teachers for three years. Dr.
Chung is also an active member and professional contributor to many
educational organizations, including National Art Education Association,
International Society for Education Through Art,
Texas Art Education Association, and American Educational Research Association.
He is currently an Assistant Professor of Art Education in the Department of
Curriculum and Instruction, University
of Houston, where he teaches
graduate courses in the area of Art Education and directs the graduate degree
programs, including the Texas
all-level teacher certification in art, Master of Education, and Doctor of
Education degrees in Art Education.
