The Assignment:

Use the letters of your name, WordArt and the Word Acrostic template to create a WordArt Acrostic Name Poem.

A great first week of school exercise, the WordArt Acrostic gives students the chance to tell a little about themselves in a creative, vocabulary-building (think of all those wonderful adjectives) way!  You can turn this into a community-building project by asking students to interview each other and then come up with words that describe their partner.  Print these out on a color printer and create an exciting class bulletin board...add some digital pictures and voila.

Adjectives:

Having trouble thinking of good, creative adjectives?  Check out this list of great character trait adjectives from a lesson about Character Traits at READ·WRITE·THINK:

Can't seem to find just the right word for your letter?  Try using Merriam-Webster's online thesaurus!  You might even have more fun with Visual Thesaurus!

Remember that you don't have to stop with students' names.  You can ask students to create WordArt Acrostics for their favorite characters in books and to explain why they chose that set of traits for that character.

Another way to interest students in Acrostics is READ·WRITE·THINK's online acrostic tool: http://www.readwritethink.org/materials/acrostic/ and lesson plans:
