week 13 topics

  • Time in class this week will be used to assist students with assignments. It is a work session for students who come to class.

    Digital stories and storyboarding

You were supposed to use Word to insert images and type in for me what you were going to say for narration or place as text on slides. Then, I could approve your topic, script, and images before you developed your presentation. That way, if revisions are needed, they are easier and less time-consuming to make at that stage of the development.

Any students who cannot attend on time are to email me no later than December 1 so that I can provide an alternative. Failure to do so will result in minus 5 points for the presentation grade.

  • Final Presentations

We’ll end our semester with face-to-face final presentations scheduled for Tuesday, April 28 and Thursday, April 30.  In this way, you will leave the course not only with what you have learned and completed, but with many other ideas to store in your “technology toolkit.”

Tuesday and Thursday students are required to prepare a 5-minute informal talk about the piece of your work that you choose – one of your technology supports or digital story that you liked or learned the most about or worked the hardest on. You’ll show it, tell us how you came up with the idea, tell us how you developed it, and share any thoughts about how you might use it.

You must present from your working portfolio online, via your full URL, and so make certain that everything is there and that your links work and images show. Know your URL for your portfolio!

Go to Wikispaces and sign up for either 3:00 or 4:00 on Tuesday or Thursday. (Thursday at 4:00 is restricted to only those students actually enrolled in Thursday's class.) Presentation is worth 5 points of semester grade. Be prepared to show one or two products, explaining what you learned from developing the product and anything you are especially proud of in developing it. Development of your portfolio is another 5 points.  I will look at the naming of your files, organization of the page, working links, and page layout, as reflected on the sample page. See sample CUIN 3112 page.

This presentation is worth 5% of the semester grade.

  • Portfolio development is worth 5 % of the semester grade. As reminded at the beginning of the semester, when naming files to place on the Internet, you should always use lower case letters, no spacing, and no punctuation. I will evaluate on that, as well as working links, and seeing that all images appear. In addition, I will evaluate based on the organization of your portfolio, as it pertains to CUIN 3112. Please let me know as you need assistance on this. Refer to the following link from Resources as a guide: http://www.coe.uh.edu/courses/cuin3112/portfolio/quest2/index.htm

read/view

  1. Week 11 links for any needed tutorials on digital storytelling.

Check for Quality:

  1. Images should last no longer than 12 seconds.

  2. All images should reflect topic or focus of the digital story.

  3. Panning should not cut off heads of subjects in the images or text that the viewer is expected to read.

  4. Images used should not be smaller than 480 by 640 pixels. Anything larger than 1000 by 1000 pixels should be decreased in size before adding to Photostory 3.

  5. Unless video is being added, Photostory 3 should be used to develop the digital story.

  6. Save images someplace other than your homepage folder so that you do not eat up valuable storage space in your X drive.

  7. Only the published .wmv should be saved in the homepage folder and then linked to on your portfolio.

  8. Make certain text is readable. Suggestion for handling text slides: PowerPoint slides can be used to insert images and text and then saved as a .jpg to help with readability issues.
