Review Assignments from Class Three

We will begin this week's class with a review of the assignments from last week.

Posting Assignment 4:

Conduct some research on the use of PowerPoint in the health sciences, medical or dental education or related fields. See if you can find a resource such as a website, article, podcast, blog, or other type of material that deals with an aspect of PowerPoint (or other related computer-based presentations) that is related to your own professional or instructional use.

Hands-On Assignment 4:
  1. In this week's class, we examined several different features of PowerPoint. For this assignment, create a PowerPoint slide presentation that includes at least 5 different slides and includes at least 5 of the following items:
  1. Word Art
  2. Clip Art
  3. Animated Clip Art
  4. A Chart, Table or Graph
  5. A New Background Added to at Least One Slide
  6. A New PowerPoint Template Added to the Entire Presentation
  7. At least One Action Button that Links to Another Slide in the Presentation
  8. At least One Action Button that Links to a Web Page
  9. Custom Animation
  10. Motion Paths
  11. A Feature Not Mentioned in the Above List

IMPORTANT NOTE: Also, please include a slide at the end of your presentation with text that describes which items you selected for this assignment.

Working with Audio

In this week's class, we will use some very basic tools to begin working with audio clips. The first thing we will need is an audio source and this will come from a microphone.

In order for the sound to reach the computer, we will connect the microphone to the input of the computer's sound card. This obviously won't work if the computer does not have a sound card, but most computers purchased within the last few years do.

Once the proper hardware connections have been made, a decision must be made regarding what software program will be used to begin recording the audio. We will begin by using the basic sound recording software, Sound Recorder, that is included with the Windows operating system.

Assignments for Next Class

Reading Assignment:

Posting Assignment:

Hands-On Assignment:

  1. Complete at least one of the following:
  1. Use a microphone to narrate several PowerPoint slides (you may use the same slides you created for last week's hands-on assignment, or you may use a new set of slides. However, your slides, and the narration, should be related to some aspect of health/medical/dental education.

  2. Using a microphone and/or any type of audio recording device (such as a digital voice recorder), conduct an audio interview with someone who can speak on a professional topic related to your work or instruction. Then use an audio editing software program of your choice (Audacity, Goldwave or any other similar program) to create a single, cleanly edited audio file that includes at least one question that you ask and at least one answer from the person you are interviewing. Finally, insert this audio file into a PowerPoint slide, where you should also add some text that describes what you did.

  3. Rip a track from an audio CD - for information on ripping a music track using Windows Media Player, go to: rip-music-track.htm

When you have ripped the music track, locate it (usually it will be in a folder inside the My Music folder, which is inside the My Documents folder on a computer running the Windows XP operating system. When you located the track, which should be a .wma file, insert the ripped music track into a PowerPoint slide.

  4. Using the audio editing software program of your choice (Audacity, Goldwave or any other similar program), attempt to edit a single audio file or any combination of audio files. For example, you may wish to shorten a CD audio track as we did in class (which would involve editing just one audio file), or you might wish to combine a narrated voice segment with a music track (which would involve editing two different audio files into one single file). Finally, insert this audio file into a PowerPoint slide, where you should also add some text that describes what you did.

When you have completed the assignment, use the online submission system at: http://eclassrooms.coe.uh.edu/assignments/ to upload the PowerPoint sides you created for this assignment. If you are unable to upload the assignment, try to bring the files with you (on a flash drive or CD) to the next class.
