Student-Designed Games from Previous Semesters
Scenario: Students met in discussion groups to:
1. Create a list of skills that we have developed so far in this class.
Each group will list those skills. For example, one skill might be:
- able to create an animation that repeats an infinite number of times
2. Then each group described three games or simulations that might be
created using that set of skills.
Students will then have a choice to complete one of those projects or
the Mystery Number project in our textbook.
Here are the suggested games:
- Subtraction Game
Level: Second Graders
Metaphor: Train Track to Home
Description: Range of 100 miles. Student at position fifty miles how many
miles before they would reach home?
- The Food Groups Gram Count
Level: Third Grade
Metaphor: Food Groups
Description: Chart showing combinations of gram counts that will multiply
to equal a designated number.
- Geography Quiz--5th grade
- opening screen is a picture of a map; the name of a country is given
- user must click on the country in the map
- feedback is given
- if correct, a new country name is given
- more information is provided about that country
- if wrong, the user must continue choosing until the correct answer
is given
- Intro to Mac/Windows--elementary school
opening screen is a screenshot of the Mac or Windows desktop
certain skills are tested such as:
- pointing, clicking and dragging
- double clicking
- using pull down menus
- using the trash
- creating folders
- placing documents in folders
if correct, user is given a golden coin
if incorrect, user is given more information and must try again
- Fire Safety Interactive Story--3rd grade
opening screen is a story and graphic explaining that the user's house
is on fire
the user is given a series of choices at each critical point in the story
depending on the choice, the user continues on a unique path through the
story
the end of the simulation occurs when the user "saves" his/her
family or burns up
- Tic Tac Toe
Students answer questions, if they get it right, the symbol "flies"
over to the location of where the question used to be.
- US Geography
Click on a state, a dialog box appears- student identifies the capital
of the state with appropriate spelling.
If inappropriate response = Gets a buzz.
If appropriate response = state turns into "gold", and new state
appears.
- Surgery
Used at two levels- basic/beginner (Jr. High) and advanced (College A&P).
Basic- identify technical name of various bones of the body
Advanced- cut an internal organ of the body out and successfully identify
the organ and its function
