The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers this degree program.

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers the Master’s of Education (M.Ed.) Degree in Special Education.  The major objective of this program is to prepare educators to assume positions in public and private school settings as well as education-oriented positions in public and private agencies or foundations.  The degree program offers two areas of emphasis within the Special Education program area:

  • The Special Education Emphasis incorporates requirements for certification to teach Special Education EC-12 (from early childhood through twelfth grade, All Levels) in the state of Texas.
  • The Educational Diagnostician Emphasis offers Certification as Educational Diagnostician in Texas Public Schools which requires a master’s degree.  The Master’s Degree may be completed prior to the certification or concurrently with the certification coursework for Educational Diagnostician.

Special Education Certification does not require a Master’s Degree.  Certification as an Educational Diagnostician requires a Master’s degree.  The Master’s Degree may be completed prior to the certification or concurrently with the certification coursework for Educational Diagnostician.

Specialization in Special Education Counseling may be pursued on an individual basis.  Students applying for specialty certificates must first satisfy the requirements for Special Education EC-12 (All Levels) Certification.

The length of the M.Ed. in Special Education varies depending on the track pursued by the student but typically requires four to five semesters of full-time study.
