PROGRAM THEME
The Department of Health and Human Performance degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Kinesiology is designed to provide doctoral level training to prepare a professional with the cognitive and research skills needed to be a productive scholar in the discipline of Kinesiology. The objectives of the proposed Ph.D. in Kinesiology are: - To train scholars with the capacity to understand and conduct research in kinesiology.
- To train scholars with the capacity to develop and evaluate educational programs consistent with the national health promotion and disease prevention objectives of Healthy People 2010.
- To train scholars with the capacity to prepare fundable research and program development proposals.
- To train teachers with the capacity to be successful in higher education and kinesiological settings in the public and private domains.
The program currently focuses on four broad areas of kinesiology: motor control and learning, physiology, sports and exercise psychology, and socio-cultural influences on physical activity and obesity.
It should be noted that the guiding philosophy of the program is that the student and advisor should work closely together to develop a course of study which appropriately meets the student’s professional goals. As such, it is highly recommended that prospective students contact the professor(s) they share common scientific interests with.
