HOME > FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR STUDENTS
- Why do I need an account to use the services in the CITE Lab?
Most of the CITE Lab equipment and the salaries of the CITE Lab staff are paid directly off of the fees that all students taking classes in the College of Education pay. Having an account and the associated login allows us to restrict CITE Lab services to College of Education students and to ensure that you are getting the most for your money.
- What will my account allow me to do?
An account in the CITE Lab gives you access to the following services:
- Access to the computers in the CITE Lab
- Access to the grayscale and color laser printers located in the CITE Lab
- 300 MB of web space (total CITE account Space)
- Access to scanners, digital still and video cameras
- CD & DVD writing software in the Labs
- What is MyAdvisor?
Used by Graduate students, MyAdvisor (http://myadvisor.coe.uh.edu) is the new electronic interface for student degree services in the College of Education. It is intended for College of Education majors. In this application, you are able to fill out many of the forms dealing with the progress toward your degree, such as filing degree plans or submitting general petitions. Students are also able to review important dates, deadlines and other pertinent information.
- I am not enrolled in a COE class in the summer, but may I use the CITE Lab during the summer semesters?
No. You must be enrolled in a College of Education class (non-PEB) during the summer in order to use the CITE Lab computers.
- Help! I forgot my username and/or password!
If you have forgotten you username or password you may simply reset it. Additionally, students and alumni will need to reset their password each semester as well.
- How is the behavior of my account different than using my home computer?
With a home computer, that is, one not connected to an enterprise-level network, your Desktop, My Documents folder, and personal settings reside only on that computer. Should you log into a different computer in your house, your files from the previous computer aren't there.
In the CITE Lab, we use roaming profiles. Here's how this works:
When you log in, your profile (your Desktop, My Documents folder, and personal settings) is downloaded from a server. When you're done using your computer and issue the log off command, your computer uploads all of the changes to your files back to the server. Then, should you log into any other computer in the CITE Labs using your account, it will download your profile. It's akin to having your profile follow you around the lab − this is why it's called a roaming profile.
- How much storage space do I have?
Students have two area of storage with quotas (i.e. limits) in the Lab. First, your Desktop and My Documents folders are limited to 300 MB. The servers will not let you exceed this amount. As you approach your quota limit, you'll receive notifications on screen as well as e-mails (if your UH alias points to a valid e-mail account that you check). Once you hit your limit, you will not be able to use your account until you delete files in these folders.
The second quota is your web space that lives on your X: Drive. You have an additional 300 MB here. Like the Desktop/My Documents quota, if you reach this limit, you will not be able to save any more information to your X: Drive.
If you need help deleting or archiving files, please see a Lab assistant.
- What happens if I don’t use my account for a long time or if I graduate?
If you have not logged into a CITE Lab computer in two semesters, your files on your Desktop and My Documents folders are deleted.
Files on your web space (X: Drive) on viking.coe.uh.edu or mariner.coe.uh.edu remain as long as the account is accessed from the web at least once a year. If the files are not accessed in a year, the account is considered dormant and the files are archived.
Alumni may keep their web space indefinitely as long as the prior condition is met.
- Is it okay if I log into two or more computers at the same time with my account?
No! Absolutely not! Don’t do it! Your roaming profile is only synchronized with the profile server upon logout. So, whatever computer is the last to log off will contain what becomes your final profile. Logging into more than one computer at a time is a great way to lose data!
- I want to use my web space on viking. How do I put files there and how do I view them on the web?
When you are logged into a CITE Lab computer, look for your X: drive. You'll see a folder called "homepage". Save anything you want web-accessible into the homepage folder.
To access your web space from the web, point your web browser to http://viking.coe.uh.edu/~username
Replacing, of course, "username" with the name you use to log into the CITE Lab computers. For a more detailed tutorials visit the CUIN 3121 tutorials.
- How do I access my web space from home?
In order to access your web space from home, you need to install WinSCP (PC users) or Fugu (MAC users). Instructions for both methods are available the CUIN 3121 tutorials.
- What do I need to know about printing in the CITE Lab?
At the beginning of each semester, every student is given 2000 printing credits. Printing a grayscale (i.e. B&W) page costs one credit. Printing one color page costs 20 credits. Please budget accordingly. No refunds of printing credit are given except for printer malfunction. Also, the maximum size of any print job is 25 pages for grayscale and 5 five for color. Any remaining account balance at the end of a semester does not roll-over to the next semester.
- If I accidentally delete one or more of my files, can I get them back?
The CITE Lab servers are backed up on a frequent schedule, but this backup is optimized for disaster recovery (i.e. the entire server fails) and not necessarily for the individual recovery of student data files. Nevertheless, if a file can be recovered from this backup, we will endeavor to do so. Please contact a lab assistant for help. Remember, it is ultimately the student’s responsibility to have a backup of all important files.
- What is the CITE Lab’s Phone Number?
- I have a question that is not answered here. Who do I ask?
Feel free to ask the lab assistant any questions you have about CITE Lab services. If they cannot answer the question immediately, they will direct you to the CITE Lab staff member who may best answer your question. You may also fill out the Contact Us form.
