Internship Application Process
(See Handbook pg. 10)
Consult the Handbook for a comprehensive explanation of the application process. These are the steps in applying for internship:
| 1. |
Consult the APPIC web site early in the year of the internship application. The site links to application materials as well as information on all internship training programs in the APPIC directory. |
 |
| 2. |
After reviewing the internship program information, identify possible sites of interest and directly request descriptive/application materials from these sites (this is often done during the late spring/early summer of the application year). |
 |
| 3. |
Update curriculum vita and begin drafting professional goals statement. It may be advantageous to tailor somewhat different versions of this statement to be appropriate to different types of training sites (e.g., university counseling center, VA Medical Center, etc.). |
 |
| 4. |
Following receipt of requested internship information, identify at least 10-15 potential sites and establish a timeline to complete applications to each. |
 |
| 5. |
Complete application materials and related personal statements (this is usually done in late summer/early Fall of the internship application year). |
 |
| 6. |
Attend the Program-sponsored, mandatory Internship Orientation meeting that is typically scheduled in late September. |
 |
| 7. |
Notify references and provide them with a copy of the vita, brief descriptions of targeted relationships, addressed and stamped envelopes, and the application deadline dates associated with each site. |
 |
| 8. |
Submit all application materials by the designated deadline dates. |
Interview Process
Some (but not all) sites may opt to conduct either on-site or phone interviews with promising candidates. A training site's policies regarding phone and/or on-site visits and interviews are usually detailed in its descriptive materials. Useful tips for preparing for and participating in phone- or on-site interviews can be found in the APAGS Internship Workbook. A copy of this document is kept in the EPSY office (491 FH) and is available for short-term borrowing. (See Handbook pg. 11)
APPIC Computer Matching System and Clearinghouse
APPIC oversees the computer matching system responsible for making internship placement decisions each year. Detailed information about the matching system and its required procedures can be found at the APPIC web site . Failure to follow the APPIC guidelines and procedures in the pursuit of an internship could constitute a violation of professional ethics.
Just before Uniform Notification Day (UND), students are informed as to whether or not they have been successfully "matched" with one of their preferred internship sites, and, on UND, they are informed electronically of their specific placement. Students who were not successfully placed are eligible to participate in the APPIC Clearinghouse and to search for alternative internship sites that have available openings. Information about the Clearinghouse and its procedures can also be found at the APPIC web site. (See Handbook pg. 11)
