Accelerated Ph.D.
General Degree Requirements

The accelerated Ph.D. in Kinesiology requires a minimum of 66 hours, including a minimum of 30 hours of research core and 6 hours of required doctoral dissertation hours.

Students accepted to the accelerated Ph.D. (Kinesiology) program will take a course load that will include both the mandatory MS (Exercise Science) core classes and the mandatory Ph.D. (Kinesiology) research core and 6 hours of discipline core in the first 30 hrs of their tenure as a graduate student in the accelerated program. Students in the accelerated Ph.D. (Kinesiology) program will be required to take the Ph.D. (Kinesiology) qualifying exam within the first year of joining the program and maintain a GPA of above 3.6 during the first 30 hours of the program.

In addition, as with graduate students enrolled in the Ph.D. (Kinesiology) program, students in the accelerated program must also under-go an annual review to assess their progress in the program.

If a student is successful in completing the first 30 hours of research core, maintaining the required academic standards and passing the Ph.D. (Kinesiology) qualifying exam, the 30 hours of completed class credit will be transferred directly into their Ph.D. degree plan. This will result in the student having completed all formal class requirements in the Ph.D. (Kinesiology) program other than 30 hours of designated electives and 6 hours of doctoral dissertation study. At this stage, a student enrolled in the accelerated Ph.D. (kinesiology) program is eligible to transfer their probationary status to full Ph.D. (Kinesiology) student by way of general petition.

If at the end of the first 30 hours a student fails to satisfy the required academic and research standards they will have the option to graduate with an M.Ed. (Physical Education) after completing an additional 6 hr of course work and successfully passing their comprehensive examination. In exceptional cases, a student may continue within the MS (Exercise Science) program with the consent of the student's advisor and GRD committee approval.

The remaining 30 hours are designated electives that are pertinent to a students course of study. These are to be taken under the direction and approval of the student’s advisor. These electives can drawn from the designated elective course list and include classes (both scheduled and Special Problems classes) offered within the department, classes offered in other departments within the University of Houston, or classes offered in support areas at other academic institutions. The approved electives will provide the student with an academic foundation in the particular discipline of study within the Ph.D. program.

In addition, each student will be required to participate in on-going research projects, develop independent research projects, generate research results that form the basis of their candidacy paper and attend research seminars and thesis/dissertation defenses within both the department and the wider scientific research community.

The cap-stone experience within the accelerated Ph.D. (Kinesiology) program is completion of a dissertation research project and dissertation document.
