Sven Schultz

“Education is more than a job, it’s a mission,” says Mr. Sven Schultz, assistant principal and head of the School of Engineering, Agriculture and Technology at Clear Brook High School.  With a great sense of humor and firm, but caring,Clear Brook HS interaction with the students, Schultz has found success at Clear Brook for the past 20 years.

Mr. Schultz received his bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Houston in 1984 and returned to earn a bachelor’s in business education in 1987.  His goal and focus was to teach business and physical education.  A weighty decision between UH and the University of Hawaii was tilted to Houston by the desire to stay close to his elderly father who lived not far from the UH campus at the time.  While studying at UH, Schultz was a member of the Swimming and Diving team.  An athletic scholarship also weighed in on his decision to attend the University of Houston.

One of Mr. Schultz’s favorite professors was his curriculum instructor for physical education, Jane Perry.

“She saw something in me I didn’t know I had.  She sent me to Rogers Elementary, and put me with kids I wasn’t trained to work with - Deaf, Autistic, gifted and talented.  I taught them PE.  Perry told me that in order for me to pass, the kids had to know how to juggle by the time she came back.  I thought I should stay home.”

Sven Schultz at GraduationMr. Schultz taught himself to juggle first.  Using chiffon scarves, he did some cross movement, 1 at a time, then 2 and then 3.  He learned about manipulatives, baby steps and collaboration in groups.  He gained confidence when he saw success in his students.  He watched blind students learn to juggle and gifted students working with the autistic.

Mr. Schultz recalled assisting his mom, Kuni Schultz, at the YMCA.  He helped her as an assistant teacher with archery and other activities.  He says her leadership helped him develop his own leadership abilities.  Mrs. Schultz used to teach tennis near Melcher Gym and was friends with Sue Garrison, the namesake for the college’s Susanna Garrison Gymnasium.
