Vanessa Stepney
“For grad students, I don’t think it’s as expensive as some other universities. The program is designed for the working student because many of the classes are at night,” said Stepney. Her fondest memories while attending UH include her favorite professors, Nita Copley and Richard Olenchak and her graduation upon completing her master’s. As she passed the faculty during the processional, several asked, “Are you leaving?” “You’re not leaving are you?” Stepney said she felt really appreciated. “I didn’t know what to expect,” said Stepney. “I found myself shying away from the professors at first because I didn’t want questions concerning my job while I was in class. I must say that none of my professors crossed the lines. They kept my roles separate.” Stepney appreciated her Teacher Certification instructors because they were realistic about what to expect in the classroom. Experiences and expectations weren’t sugar-coated. Professor Nita Copley wanted her students to be prepared for everything. Stepney took part in mock parent-teacher conferences set up by Copley so that teacher candidates would be aware of issues they might encounter with parents. Stepney benefitted from the advice given on how to handle the different situations. Of particular benefit was the training received in her Instructional Technology courses, which gave Stepney practical information and experiences on how to take a computer apart and put it back together as well as the ins and outs of Stepney’s pet pastimes include reading, shopping and traveling. When asked about her favorite book, she had this to say. “The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Soulja. Whenever I run into someone who wants to start reading I always tell them about this book. It has action. It’s moving and it helps to tell you about life.” Stepney has given back to the university by participating in staff council, volunteering at Cougar 1st Impression as well as Staff Appreciation Day. She’s a great example of a proud Cougar!
