The BOUNCE Summer Program in the Department of Health and Human Performance

at the University of Houston under the direction of Dr. Norma Olvera
is looking for interns and volunteers for the Summer 2010
Available to Undergraduate, Post Bacc, and Graduate Students
Interns and Volunteers will gain mentored experience in research related activities including:

  • Clinical Measurements (height, weight,  body fat , waist and hip circumference, heart rate, blood pressure)
  • Physical Fitness Measurements (one-mile run, sit-ups, push-ups, sit-n-reach, shoulder stretch)
  • Survey Administration to both children and adults
  • Organizing and processing research data
  • Teaching nutrition classes to children
  • Interacting with children and their parents in the health atmosphere
  • Demonstrating proper cooking and meal preparation techniques
  • Serving healthy snacks and meals to children
  • Educating children on the importance of a healthy lifestyle

Interns and volunteers will be scheduled based on their availability and project needs:
Shifts include morning (8:30 am – 1:00 pm) & afternoon (12:30 pm – 5:30 pm). Hours range from 10 to 20 hours per week.

Undergraduate Internships in Obesity Prevention and Control

The UNDO research group in the Department of Health and Human Performance
at the University of Houston under the direction of Dr. Rebecca Lee
is now accepting applications from qualified interns for Spring 2010

Available to Undergraduate Students

Interns will gain mentored experience in research related activities including:

  • Physical health assessments (resting heart rate, blood pressure, height, weight and  percent body fat)
  • Auditing neighborhoods with advanced field data collection technology
  • Organizing and processing research data
  • Recruiting and helping research participants in the virtual world of Second Life
  • Interacting with community members at health fairs

Interns will be scheduled based on their availability and project needs:

Shifts include morning (10:00 am – 2:00 pm) & evening (2:00 pm – 6:00 pm) Hours range from 10 to 20 hours per week

Successful applicants must have:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated writing proficiency
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer literacy and interest in obesity or related health research

Volunteer needed at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital located at 11800 Astoria Blvd. Responsibilities would include obtaining patient menu requests, delivering supplement and tube feeding products to the patients, and gathering food items for our units floor stock. Room Service Assistant

We presently have a part time AM opening - 30 hr. weekly (5AM - 3PM) with benefits (i.e. vacation, holiday, tuition assistance, medical, etc.) for a Room Service Assistant.  Pay - approx. $10.30+/hr. + shift dif.  We are open 7/24/365 so weekends/holidays are required.  We can work around school schedules if only 2 days a week are need off in the AM, but the other days the applicant must be able to work the hours of 5AM - 3PM. 

The Room Service Assistant's position is a phone position taking patient and guest meal orders and entering them into CBORD and POS software, preparing and dispensing oral supplements and tube feedings, and preparing and editing multiple reports using word and excel. 

Required: high school diploma and 2 years customer service or 2 years of college.  Spanish or Arabic speaking is a plus.   This is not just a temp/summer position.  We are looking for continued employment and someone wanting a position for 2 years or more with a growing organization.

Physical Activity Instructor - Baylor College of Medicine-Children’s Nutrition Research Center

JOB SUMMARY:
Physical Activity Instructor needed on an hourly part-time basis. Hiring Range: $7.50 - $10.00/hour. Must be able to work during school hours (7:00 AM to 4:30 PM). Would work approximately 10 hours/week.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
1) Conducts physical activity with middle school children.
2) Maintains research data records.
3) Collects research data.
4) Follows protocol for engaging students in physical activity.
5) Works in a multidisciplinary team setting.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education Required: High school diploma or G.E.D.
Education Preferred: Some college level coursework in physical activity or related area.
Experience Preferred: Direct work with children and/or adolescents.
Certification/Licenses/Registration: None required.

Description: You will be assisting Marian Bell, owner of Marian Bell’s Healthy Kitchen – a Healthy Lifestyle cooking and coaching service.
Your role will be assisting with editing recipes and creating vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free cookbooks. Daily tasks will include proofreading, web research, creating mini-cards with health tips and assisting with cooking classes.  
This internship is non-paid. In addition to the invaluable experience offered, students will also benefit from numerous industry networking opportunities, free healthy lifestyle classes, introduction to vegetarian and vegan cooking, and all the yummy healthy food they want to try!
