• The United States to 1877

  This course is a portrait of the basic forces that shaped American history from the country's colonial roots to its rise as a world power in the late nineteenth century. It is a story of explosive growth, enormous material achievement, and soaring idealism. It is a story, too, of injustice, prejudice, violence, and rinding disorder.

   

• The United States since 1877

  This course analyzes the history of modern America, from its rise as an industrial and military power in the late nineteenth century to the Persian Gulf War It charts the revolutions in business, morals, politics, race relations, and everyday living which have transformed American life over the past century.

   

• American History Through Film

  This course examines the evolution of the first, most popular, and most influential instrument of mass culture: the movies. Movies have been a major factor in the "modernization" American culture, helping to disseminate a new set of norms and fashions that applied to taste, masculinity, femininity, life styles, and politics. Films offer a treasure chest of insights into American values, beliefs, and behavior.

   

• 19th Century U.S. Historiography

  This seminar offers a introduction to the literature and interpretations of the key issues in nineteenth century American history. The readings are meant to introduce graduate students to the latest findings and historiographical controversies in major fields of political or social history that has been the subject of recent lively debate.
