Memorial Park Conservancy |
Monday, March 9 to Friday, March 13, 2009
9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Invasive Species Removal
Join Memorial Park Conservancy volunteers and Endangered Species Media Project for the last phase of the one-year grant for Invasive Species Removal. High School and Middle School Students from H.I.S.D get volunteer hours for working in Memorial Park. Students use Picnic Loop Lane as an outdoor classroom and are given three invasive (non-native) plant species to focus on removing. Volunteers help students with the scientific method. Students are asked to identify the specific invasive plant, and remove it from the forest. The students genuinely love working in an outdoor setting and getting to remove the invasive species. This is a fun volunteer effort and will require an orientation for volunteers. Lunch will be provided. We request that anyone volunteering make a two day commitment to this effort and that you stay the whole day.

Breakthrough Houston |
I'm the Program Director here at Breakthrough Houston (formerly Summerbridge), an educational enrichment program for highly-motivated, under-served youth in HISD. We offer Saturday School, tutoring, high school options counseling, mentoring programs, and an exciting 6-week summer program for our students. The best part? We're a students-teaching-students model, so all the classes for our Breakthrough kids are taught by high-school and college students. We're a partner program of Teach for America, and they recruit many of our summer teachers to go on and teach with TFA.
I am about to begin my recruitment season for summer teachers. Our teachers work 8-weeks this summer, from June 1-July 24, teaching academic classes, electives, and activities; as well as serving as an advisor to 3-4 students. Teachers write their own lesson plans, with help from a 'mentor teacher' who's been out in the field for a few years. Our teachers constantly get great feedback from mentors and peers through our observation system.
If you are interested in some real teaching experience, please send read the teacher handbook and check out the application at http://www.teachbreakthroughs.org.
Thanks!
