THE BOOK OF DURROW (facsimile page)

The Book of Durrow represents yet another aspect of medieval thinking about books as treasure. It is one of the most beautifully decorated Hiberno-Saxon gospel books made for monks and missionaries in Ireland and England during the 8th and 9th centuries. It is also a spiritual treasure because it contains the Word of God. But it was most important for its sacred power to perform miracles. For many centuries the Book of Durrow was dunked in water because it was believed to have the ability to transform water into a healing potion for sick cows.
