THE TRES RICHES HEURES (facsimile)
This luxury book of hours was commissioned by Jean, Duke de Berry, in the early fifteenth century. It was but one of many exquisite books the Duke had had made by artists whose styles he favored – here the Limbourg brothers. For Jean de Berry and many other manuscripts owners of his class, beautiful books were aesthetic, intellectual, and spiritual treasures. Patrons like the Duke de Berry also treasured such books as expressions and enhancements of their status, reflecting their cultivated tastes as well as their wealth.
