MATTHEW PARIS, CHRONICA MAJORA

History, in the sense of records of events and customs, also emerged as a genre of writing about the same time as the universities developed. Matthew Paris was a thirteenth-century monk and chronicler who wrote and probably also illustrated a history of England, his native land. His Chronicles of England is represented here by reproductions of illustrations from the original manuscript of his work.
