TACUINUM SANITATIS (facsimile)

The Tacuinum Sanitatis was a Medieval health manual. Its images and text reflect recognition of the effect of the mind on the body and recommended that people engage in pleasurable activities in order to preserve good health and prevent disease. Music, dancing, and pleasant conversation with friends were especially highly recommended, particularly in beautiful natural settings. However, it was also considered essential to temper experiences of joy, since excessive joy was thought to lead to death.
