Rather graduated from Sam Houston State College in Huntsville, TX in August 1959. Rather interviewed Eldrewey Stearns after Stearns charged police brutality at the August 1959 Houston City Council meeting.
After the downtown lunch counters were desegregated, Stearns called Rather to find out if Rather wanted to interview him for a story on desegregation efforts. Rather explained to Stearns that because of the agreed upon media black-out there would be no media coverage of the event.
In 1961 Rather did interview Stearns again when Rather was news director at KHOU-TV in Houston.we would be grateful to hear your personal stories, suggestions and comments
