Upward Bound (UB)
How to Apply to the Program
We are pleased that you are considering participation in the Upward Bound program at the University of Houston. The purpose of this program is to provide low-income and potential first-generation college students with the skills and knowledge that will help them become successful in high school, in college and beyond.
Eligibility:
To qualify for Upward Bound, the student must have one or both of the following qualifications:
Be a potential first generation college student, meaning the primary caregiver(s) have not received a bachelor degree,
AND/OR
Be of low income in accordance with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services chart shown below:
Time Commitment:
If selected, students are expected to actively participate in all activities, every semester until high school graduation. This includes:
Fall and Spring semesters: weekly sessions either after school and Saturday field trips once every report card cycle.
Summer semester: in-residence session at UH, 6-weeks in June – July. The summer residential program is six weeks from June through July. During the summer, students live at the University of Houston during the week and go home every weekend.
Additional activities are required for seniors as they apply for colleges and financial aid.

Application Procedure:
The program accepts application year-round. It is recommended that you submit a complete application as soon as you are able.
If chosen for an interview, you will be contacted by an administrative staff member. Students who are not accepted immediately may be placed on a waiting list and their application will be reconsidered with the next group of applicants.
The program only serves 50 students at one time, usually about 12 students in each of the four high schools. When a space becomes available, it is filled with one of the completed applications we have on file. Spaces usually become available at the end of each semester.
