SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY PARTNERSHIPS (SUP)

As part of the Institute for Urban Education, the School and University Partnerships develops partnerships that couple the resources and expertise of The Institute for Urban Education and University of Houston with that of schools in the Houston area to implement programs to impact students academically, personally, and socially.   

CURRENT PROJECTS

Upward Bound (UB)

Mission Statement:To help students recognize and achieve their potential to excel and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees.

UB serves 50 students who have an interest in pursuing postsecondary education. These students are potential first-generation college students and of low income.

Currently, UB  serves students from four Houston ISD high schools: Austin HS, Sam Houston HS, Scarborough HS, and Wheatley HS.

PAST PROJECTS

Upward Bound Math & Science (UBMS)

Mission Statement: To help students recognize and achieve their potential to excel in math and science and encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in these fields.

UBMS identified students who are potential first-generation college students and of low income who have an interest in pursuing postsecondary education and STEM careers.

UBMS served students in the Houston-metropolitan area, regardless of the school district they are enrolled in.

Can Do

Mission Statement: To reduce and prevent the incidence of juvenile delinquency among elementary, middle, and high school students developing their academic skills and self concept through tutoring and mentoring by University students.

CAN DO aimed to increase the academic achievement of participants, increase the school attendance rate of participants, demonstrate improved conduct grades, and actively engage parents of participants in the educational process.

Project GRAD

Mission Statement: To strengthen high school students' understanding of higher education and expose them to various aspects of college life to prepare them for collegiate success.

This program worked to equip students to successfully complete the academic requirements of their next grade level in high school, prepare them to engage and complete the college admission process, and set them up for optimal academic functioning in the university environment.

Project GRAD served Davis High School, Sam Houston High School, Reagan High School, Wheatley High School, and Yates High School.
